Five Days with My Sister

My birthday present from Josh was a flight to San Diego.  I really wanted to make it back there before Katie moved.  Her plan is to move home at the end of June and then travel to South Korea in the fall to teach English for a year.  Honestly,  wasn’t too thrilled about the idea.  Selfishly, I didn’t want her to be so far away, but I realize it is an amazing life experience and I wouldn’t want her to pass it up.  I’m very excited for her.  I’ll just be the big sister that worries….

So to San Diego I went (now over two weeks ago), and Katie and I had a very special 5 days together.  We didn’t have to do much, just being together was great sister bonding.  Of course, Katie always has great plans up her sleeve.  Like 5 days of gifts for mama to open for baby Slagle.  She says she has to make up for all the gifting she will miss while she is gone.  Our little guy is so loved already and on his way to be very well dressed!

DAY 1

Katie is a nanny in San Diego for a sweet little girl named Shannon.  There is no doubt she is going to be greatly missed when she departs!  Katie and Shan picked me up from the airport and we hung out for the afternoon.

Katie and Shan after her nap- nothing like watching Micky Mouse and a little stomach scratching.

After Katie was done with work we headed to La Jolla for some dinner at a tapas restaurant and then to downtown San Diego for a show.  Katie got a tickets to an 80′s musical called Mixtape and it was great!  Even baby boy Slagle enjoyed the trip back to the 80′s.

DAY 2

Nanny morning…

I feel as though Shan and I are buds because we skype quite often.  She calls me by name, sings me songs and tells me I’m going to have a “baby boy”, but when she saw me in real life our cyber friendship didn’t quite carry over.  Shannon is really not that happy to be sitting next to me, but Katie was making her smile.  We were growing our friendship until Katie left her with me at the pool for a few minutes to move the car.  I was happily entertaining her in the poll when she looked around and couldn’t find Katie.   “Where Katie go? Go find Katie?  Go find Katie?” and lots of tears!  Thankfully I was able to control the meltdown until Katie came back but it ended all chances of us becoming very good buddies.  She didn’t let Katie leave her alone with me again.

We checked into our hotel and what a gorgeous view of the bay we had.  Thanks to Katie’s bestie Savannah, we got a discount rate and great room at the Catamaran Resort.

View of the bay from our room.

Katie took the afternoon off so we caught some rays poolside and then showered up for a little hotel event.  The dad that Katie nanny’s for was invited to a hotel client appreciation barbeque and he put us on the list.

Savannah, Mary (Shannon’s mom), Katie and I enjoying the free music, beer and food.  Obviously I couldn’t get enough of the food!

Sisters

After the event was over, we found a place outside the resort to gather and have a few more cocktails, mine of the virgin type.  We shared lots of laughs and a few tears (or many)…. Katie was feeling quite sad about leaving Shannon behind.  Mary and Kyle (Shan’s parents) expressed their sadness but also their gratitude for having such a wonderful nanny.  No one can replace Katie and that’s a fact.

DAY 3

Katie treated me to a wonderful relaxing prenatal massage!  She said it was my mother’s day present and had it all scheduled so I couldn’t turn it down.  It was fabulous.  I am so lucky to have such a thoughtful sis!

After the massage we headed to the Little Italy Farmer’s Market.  I love farmer’s markets… oh and the fresh flowers were gorgeous!  I want to buy them all up.  I guess it was a good thing I didn’t have a place to take them home to.

Then it was ice cream stop, nap, pool and happy hour…

Not so much cocktails but cards and snacks.  Katie’s boyfriend, Adam, treated us to a nice dinner at Rock Bottom and then we returned to the hotel for a relaxing evening and early to bed.

DAY 4

Day 4 went something likes this… morning workout at the hotel gym, mani/pedis, a little shopping, pool, rest, Balboa park, dinner at Katie’s favorite Thai restaurant (Thai Basil), then back to the hotel to go on a boat ride.  Scratch the boat ride, hard to get on a boat ride when it’s not running.  We had a good laugh trying to open a bottle of wine.  It took us forever!  We played phase 10 and waited for the Sea World fireworks… those actually happened and unlike the night before, I had my camera ready to take some pictures.

Day 5

I got in a morning workout while Katie went in for her babysitting duties.  She came and picked me up and we took Shan to the park.

Katie is amazing with Shan, and that’s an understatement.  They are so cute together.  Katie will be a wonderful mama some day!

We watched Shannon for a half day and then decided to take Katie’s car to Carmax instead of going shopping (make money rather than spend it).   Carmax gave us a great quote on the Honda so she plans to sell it to them before she leaves.   We headed back to the house where Katie was staying, made pizza and then went to see a movie (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- great movie).

Five days goes by so fast but spending time with my sis is always refreshing.  I love you sis.
